LINCOLN CELEBRATION RETURNS TO SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL
Event to feature Lance Mack as President as well as dancing with Smith Family Band
Mayor Chris Beutler today announced plans for the City's 12th annual Abraham Lincoln Birthday Celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 12. The free celebration will return to Southwest High School, 7001 South 14th Street. The event is presented by the City of Lincoln with support from the Nebraska Humanities Council, Lincoln Public Schools, Lincoln Benefit Life, Cornhusker Bank and other individuals and organizations.
All events will take place in the school's commons area. Local musician Chris Sayre, who has performed at every celebration, will warm up the crowd at 1 p.m. The Smith Family Band of Hastings will play from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and Pam Smith will lead the crowd in traditional dances.
The band will take breaks at 2 p.m., 3, p.m. and 4 p.m. for 10-minute performances by Lance Mack of Marion, Iowa as President Abraham Lincoln. A former university professor, Mack has been portraying Lincoln since 1989. He has performed at hundreds of events including reenactments as well as school, political and holiday events.
Those dressing as President Lincoln can enter the "Impersonators Contest" by registering at the information desk the day of the event. Judging will take place following Mack's 2 p.m. performance. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. and the crowd will sing Happy Birthday to President Lincoln just before Mack's performance.
Exhibitors will include:
• Susan Dittman of Lincoln, author of "Abraham Lincoln's Shining Star – the Inspiring Story of Abraham Lincoln and Nebraska."
• The Homestead National Monument, which is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act signed by President Lincoln in 1862.
• Organizations such as the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
Free refreshments, including birthday cake, will be available all afternoon and a children's area will feature toys, games and crafts. Area Civil War re-enactors in authentic uniforms will mingle with the crowd and answer questions. .
