Learning Through the Arts in 2012: Artists in Residence at Lincoln Public Schools
Posted by: Lincoln Arts Council
We are thrilled to announce the approval of funding from the Nebraska Arts Council for a Artists in Schools/Communities Residency Program Sponsor Grant. The grant will support residencies for two local artists, Carrie Strope and Madison Simmons, at Riley Elementary School and Park Middle School this winter.
Carrie Strope's residency will take place at Riley Elementary beginning in January of 2012. Carrie will introduce the basic history and process of glass fusing to the 2nd and 3rd grade students. The students will be collaborating to create an abstract fused glass window installation. The installation will be a compilation of glass fused tiles that are designed and handcrafted by each student.
Madison Simmons' residency will occur in February and March of 2012 at Park Middle School. Madison Simmons will introduce the 7th grade art students to textile art techniques used to embellish, alter, and transform a variety of materials into wearable and non-wearable art. The students will apply these techniques to a textiles installation that they will create during this residency.
This is the third year that the Lincoln Arts Council has received funding from the Nebraska Arts Council for this residency program. We would like to thank the NAC and the AmeriCorps program for making these residencies possible. These opportunities make our arts community stronger and help us carry out our mission to inspire a creative community.
