Provide the Crucial Piece of Our Artist-In-Residence Programs

Support the Lincoln Arts CouncilThe artist-in-residence program provides unique first-time arts experiences to the children of our community. A crucial piece of our residencies comes from the AmeriCorps program, which provides community service for nonprofit organizations. AmeriCorps members gain skills and experience, and the chance to do professional work in an apprenticeship environment. Without the assistance of AmeriCorps, we'd be missing a vital piece of our workforce, and these residencies would not be possible.

Our Artist-In-Residence fund drive provides essential support to the residencies. Every dollar you donate in this campaign results in $5 of additional support to continue and enrich our AmeriCorps staffing. Help provide the key piece of the artist residencies, and together we can provide arts experiences that help our children reach their full potential!

Learning Through the Arts - Madison Simmons & Park Middle School

Madison SimmonsOn February 20, Madison Simmons began her artist-in-residency session at Park Middle School. During this twenty hour residency with the seventh grade art students, Madison will introduce textile art techniques used to embellish, alter, and transform a variety of materials into wearable and non-wearable art. The 7th grade art students at Park Middle School will be working on two different projects during this residency. One will be a collaborative project which will be permanently installed at Park Middle School, and the other will be an individual project that the students will be able to keep.

During this residency students will learn how to: transfer images onto fabric, use fiber reactive dyes to change the color of fabric, and use a variety of embroidery techniques to embellish, alter, and transform imagery. Madison will start this residency with the students by working on the collaborative project. The students as a group will brainstorm a common theme that will relate their pieces to one other. Each student will create their own piece on a square of silk fabric, which will demonstrate techniques of textile alteration. After the individual squares are created, students will then work as a team to assemble them into a cohesive installation that will be put on permanent display in the halls of Park Middle School. After the first project is complete, the students will then create their own piece on fabric of their choice (wearable or non-wearable), demonstrating the textile alteration techniques they have learned. The content of the individual project will be up to the student, and each will discuss their content with Madison. On the final day of the residency, students will present their individual projects to the class.

March First Friday Art Walk

First FridayEvery First Friday of the month is an event that many communities across the nation celebrate.  In Lincoln's Art Community, it allows a chance for local art galleries and establishments to open their doors to the public and have open house events where the public can come and see what is new in the art world.  Here on the Lincoln Arts Council website, we offer a complete guide to all of open houses for Lincoln's First Friday Art Walk.  If you know of an event that is happening, that is not listed in our guide, please feel free to email "Events" at events@artscene.org and we will be sure to post it as soon as possible.

Support our local art scene and see what's new in the world of the arts!  Happy First Friday!

Carrie Strope at Riley Elementary: Reception for Glass Fused Installation

I am a glass artistOn January 25, Carrie Strope began her artist-in-residency session at Riley Elementary. During this residency, the second- and third-grade students learned about the process of glass fusing. The students worked together to create an abstract fused glass window installation. The installation is compilation of 4"x4" glass tiles that are designed and handcrafted by each student.

Please join us to celebrate the fused glass installation at the public reception on Thursday, February 23 at Riley Elementary School. During the reception, students will share their experiences from the residency with family, friends, and teachers.

Thank you to the Nebraska Arts Council and the AmeriCorps program for making this residency possible. This is the third year the Lincoln Arts Council has received funding for residency programming. These opportunities inspire young minds, ignite the learning process, and strengthen our arts community.
